"We are The Crystal Gems. We always save the day, and, if you think we can't, we always find a way."

Pearl is one of four members of the monster fighting group, The Crystal Gems, permanently stationed in scenic Beach City. Garnet, Amethyst, Steven Universe and Pearl live within the temple built my their people long ago. For centuries The Crystal Gems (minus Steven) have protected Earth from superhuman dangers caused by their own technology, for they came from another planet eons ago and brought with them magic and architecture beyond human ability. They are shown to respect human society, however, and dedicate themselves to its protection even though it is not as advanced as their own.

"That's why the people of this world believe in Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl... and Steven!"

The other members of Pearl's team are as close as family to her, and that sometimes causes problems like any family has. Sometimes the issues go beyond that, seeing as they are faced with dangerous situations on a regular basis.

For example, with Steven she is caring, but too much so. Steven is the youngest of the group and is the son of a previous member who gave up their existence to bring him life. As such, she is extremely overbearing and overprotective of him in the name of Rose Quartz, his mother. She means well, of course; sometimes she is able to simply accept his dorky humor with a laugh, confusion or at least just a sigh. She even sometimes humors him. Unfortunately, though, her far more common nervous behavior has not only endangered Steven and/or herself even more a few times, but often makes things worse as she makes others unsettled around her. When he is in critical danger, she sometimes even cannot bring herself to watch.

With Garnet, the Crystal Gem whose stoicism and supernatural foresight often lead the team to their next mission, Pearl is the most respectful, often even clinging to Garnet for strength. When in a panic, Garnet is generally who Pearl relies on to fix things. However, she will complain loudly if/when she disagrees with Garnet's decisions, such as when Garnet allows Steven to do something Pearl had decided was too dangerous.

With Amethyst she is far more dismissive, and sometimes outright vicious. She regards Amethyst often with only occasionally veiled disdain, usually opting to yell at her for her antics directly in front of the rest of their family/group. Pearl has also been known to physically shove Amethyst away for teasing her and to laugh longer than probably appropriate when others poke fun at Amethyst's quirks. However, in spite of all of this Pearl and Amethyst appear to have been closer in the past and will work well together in a crisis, sometimes apologizing for their own flaws to one another.

On the whole, they work well together in a crisis and Pearl is more than willing to push herself into combat to save any member of her family. (Including Amethyst.) In fact, their bonds sometimes bring them close enough to unite minds and bodies into one to form a more powerful warrior to fight monsters.

"Pay attention to these petals, Steven. The petals' dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real time based on the physical properties of this planet. With hard work, and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gem and perform your own dance!"

Personality-wise, Pearl herself is notable for being dedicated to balance, diligence with practice, and respects skill. She enjoys looking coordinated and graceful, and her power is formed by it. Not every Gem controls their magic in the same way, and the quote above describes how she achieved mastery over her own abilities.

Unfortunately, as noted with the above character relationships, she is not always pleasant, coordinated or stoic. She can easily be distracted by chaos, disorder and argument.

"Let this be the perfect battle. [....] We shall let our swords decide."

Within the context of the show, Pearl herself possesses enough magic to create weapons from the gem on her forehead, such as ornate staves and swords, as well as holograms and the ability to swiftly manipulate malleable materials (such as sand) into shapes she wants them to be. She is also at least over 100 years old, likely thousands, and has become masterfully proficient in at least a few types of swords and spears in the meantime. She also has the power to create spheres of energy for ranged attacks.

She also seems to be fairly competent at creating plans on the fly, though they often seem to be overcomplicated until her teammates assist her with them. She works most effectively when she is not the only one making commands.

"I could show you how to be strong in the real way, and I know that we can be strong in the real way."

Pearl respects skill over brute strength in combat, and brains in a plan over brawn. This is shown distinctly in a situation where one combatant on her team, Sugilite (Amethyst and Garnet unified), attempts to impress Steven. She is even shown being jealous of that much power, as shown in lines of a song she sings in that episode. In any case, she does not respond well to it and can become intimidated, but also enraged about it if her own plans are cast aside for a more forward and destructive approach.

"I want to inspire you. I want to be your rock, and, when I talk, it lights a fire in you."

No matter what Pearl had planned, she does very much enjoy stopping what she's doing to teach people. Whether it's demonstrating to someone how to sword-fight, as she's done with Steven, or teaching them the history of Gem culture, she'd bright and shining like the stone upon her head is. Every opportunity to teach Steven is met with elation, even those about the folly of humankind. This is often played for laughs, as Pearl is often down in the mouth about humanity even though her tone is light.

"Oh, Steven. Humans just lead short, boring, insignificant lives, so they make up stories to feel like they're a part of something bigger."

As seen in the quote above, Pearl doesn't have a huge respect for humans in comparison to her own species, the Gems. She respects their right to life and their right to safety from Gem magic, but not their choices and their contributions to life as a whole. She's often seen caring more about architecture of Gem creation than human creation, and the history of Gems is very important for her to pass on to Steven in multiple episodes. She doesn't share this passion about humans nearly as much.

She does appreciate the craftsmanship they can put into things, such as sword designs and food preparation, but it is likely only for the fact that she respects the time and diligence for the crafts. Their actual results may not be as important to her.

She also does appreciate nature. Non-human things on Earth do interest her somewhat. Trees, for example.

"It might as well be your birthday, so why don't we have a party? Even if your age isn't real and your body's an illusion..."

Furthermore, Pearl and the rest of the Gems often don't celebrate human holidays and activities, and aren't used to doing so. Their bodies are not even "real" in the normal sense; they are astral projections of whatever they'd like to look like. They are even capable of shape-shifting into other objects, animals, or impressions of people if they normally desire so.

As such, they don't age, and Pearl is not used to the normal processes that a human would experience. Eating, sleeping, and all internal body functions are not something Pearl is used to experiencing. Within the context of Ryslig, they will all be very foreign.
Pearl herself is actually horrified by the concept of eating, though not food itself. Eating humans, though, will be one of the worse concepts she can imagine.

"All those monster we fight used to be just like us! [....] But they've become corrupted and broken. We have to take care of them, subdue them, contain them. It's the best we can do for them, for now. If we don't, then..."

Related to the above, death will also be a foreign concept to Pearl. Destruction of the body is generally fully reversible. Unfortunately, however, when the damage happens to a Gem happens to their actual stone, their powers are more difficult to control and their body becomes distorted.

This will be critical in Pearl's interpretation of Ryslig monsters. The concept of people around her becoming corrupt and monstrous is a familiar notion to Pearl, and it's a very sad one. The above quote is said with a sad air, and she will likely believe any transformation to be a travesty.

That said, she often others monsters, seeing them as less than conscious even when they are not all destructive. She will attack them, and she does fight to capture them. She does not identify them with their former selves.

"It really is incredible out there, though. I wish you could see it, Steven."

Pearl is relatively obsessed with returning to the Gem home world, or at least space in general. She, at one instance, endangers Steven's life in order to show him the stars in a crudely built spaceship she constructed out of spare parts of human technology. She does not seem to enjoy Earth particularly well, or at least is desperate to return to the stars after being trapped on the planet for years. After all of the happenings of Ryslig, it is likely she will very, very desperately wish to return home.

"You don't understand. Symmetrical means both sides have to be the same!"

Lastly, one of Pearl's most noticeable personality traits is based on her dedication to perfect form and balance, as she likes to keep the world around her in balance also. The above quote was made while stabbing an item Amethyst had placed on her perfectly organized pile of objects. On numerous occasions she is shown being disgusted by anything somewhat unclean, and angered by asymmetry. This will undoubtedly show up in Ryslig at least once as she often forms opinions of people with it.
